The 500,000 gold coins, with a face value of $5, were quickly sold out for $175 apiece. Two coins are on sale: silver dollars for $24 each and copper-nickel alloy half-dollars for $7.50.
Not only are they keepsakes, they are also legal tender. Millions of these coins are currently being sold through the mail by the United States Mint or at 16,000 bank branches (including Citibank and Manufacturers Hanover) and 3,500 department store units (including Sears, Bloomingdale's and K Mart). With a portion of the purchase price used for restoring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, these pieces represent the first time that the statue has appeared on American coinage. Bowsky was talking about the special coins minted by the Treasury to commemorate the 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial. ''The initial shipment came in and we had to go back and order.'' ''The coins are doing very well,'' he said.
